Norma, 47, had worked in management for most of her adult life – holding stable jobs that came with health insurance benefits. Then, the company that employed her was sold. Norma and her husband, who had worked for the same company, were unemployed and uninsured. Determined to make the best of a bad situation, Norma went back to college to finish her degree in business administration. However, with just weeks to go until graduation, Norma suffered a stroke. Doctors believe a congenital hole in her heart allowed a blood clot to travel from her leg to her brain.
At this low point, Norma found compassionate care at Healing Hands Health Center. Through the organization’s prescription assistance program, Norma is able to get the blood-thinning medications that she must take to prevent another stroke at a nominal cost. One of those medications costs more than $150 for just two doses.
I had never imagined that I would need help. I had worked since I was very young,” she said. “Healing Hands helped me get my medicines.
Norma, who earned her degree while recovering from her stroke, continues to receive medical and dental care at Healing Hands as she looks for a job. She and her husband are grateful that an organization like Healing Hands exists to help those who have worked hard all their lives but are “down on their luck.”
